    MSI Clutch GM41 Mouse Test

    If we rather know MSI for its excellent motherboards and graphics cards , the brand also offers a complete range of peripherals intended for gamers.

    Riding on the current trend of ultralight mice, MSI today unveils its Clutch GM41 displaying only 65 g on the scale. The idea is obviously to compete with certain references in the sector, such as the Glorious Model O , the Razer Viper or the most recent Mountain Makalu 67.

    Design & Ergonomics

    If MSI has often accustomed us to very “flashy” designs, the latest from the manufacturer displays a style a little more sober than usual.

    The mouse opts for a rather minimalist look, with a model that is on paper simple and effective. The field mouse is only offered in black and gray tones and comes with a small touch of RGB with the brand’s logo positioned on the side of the palm rest.

    A little more in detail, we first dwell on the dimensions of this MSI Clutch GM41. Here the manufacturer stands out a little from most of its competitors by presenting a mouse with a rather imposing size.

    Compact Dimension

    With dimensions of 130.1 x 67 x 38.3 mm, it moves away from the ultra-compact models that we had discovered in recent months, like the Cooler Master MM710 , the Xtrfy M42 or the Razer Viper Mini.

    Everything is weighed at about 65 g on the scale and for once it is a great feat on the part of MSI. Who manages here to reach this featherweight without the slightest perforation. For comparison, the Razer Viper weighs around 69g and has slightly more compact dimensions.

    Speaking of Razer Viper, it’s hard not to find some inspiration in it when you focus on the ergonomics of this GM41. By comparing the two models, we quickly see some similarities in terms of their format and their lines.

    This is particularly the case on the upper part of the mouse, which takes a format quite close to that of the Viper but in dimensions revised upwards. We also remain in both cases on a symmetrical format, even if the curvatures of the facades of the GM41 are in our opinion a little less subtle.

    Comfortables Mouse

    This slightly more marked choice does not bring any real advantage in terms of handling and may even bring some discomfort depending on the way you hold your mouse. If we enjoy correct comfort in Palm Grip , it is a little more complicated on our side when we opt for Claw Grip.

    It is difficult to secure the mouse really well and the ring finger is struggling to find its place. The Viper seems to us clearly better thought out, or at least adapts much more easily to our hand.

    Buttons for MSI Clutch GM41

    On the button side, we first find the two main clicks, here equipped with Omron switches with 60 million activations. Nothing to say about that, with very reactive activations, without pre or post-travel . It responds well and no play is to report on the side of the pallets.

    Between the two, there is a wheel well inserted in the mouse and easy to access. It is covered with a textured rubber coating and has well-marked notches. On our copy, however, they lack homogeneity and some notches are more marked and more audible than others.

    Two buttons are positioned on the left front of the mouse. Long and thin, they are easy to access and again offer perfectly adequate responsiveness and a good return to activation.

    Note also the presence of rubber grips on each of the fronts of the mouse. Rather pleasant, they bring a little more to the level of support.

    Connection MSI Gm41

    In terms of connectivity, the mouse comes with a 2m cable called MSI FrixionFree and designed to reduce friction on its mat. In use, it is above all one of the worst cables we have had the opportunity to test in recent years.

    While we expect to find a perfectly flexible and light cable like on most recent ultralight mice, MSI’s cable is incredibly stiff. Associated with the featherweight of the mouse, it is quite simply an aberration and it is clearly difficult to understand this choice.

    Depending on its position in your setup, it can quite simply render this Clutch GM41 unusable. The use of a bungee seems mandatory to us.

    Pads for mouse MSI GM41

    At the back of the mouse, there are 2 PTFE pads on the front and a circular one on the back. Leaving aside the cable, they provide excellent mouse glide. Too bad a spare set is not provided in the box in order to replace them after a few months of use.

    In the center, we find the sensor of the Clutch GM41 and to its right a last button allowing to switch between the different levels of DPI.

    MSI Dragon Center software

    To accompany its mouse, the brand proposes to install its in-house software MSI Dragon Center. Like a Corsair iCUE, the tool acts as a real hub and makes it possible to manage both the manufacturer’s components and peripherals.

    Overall, the application is not necessarily very intuitive and seems mainly composed of different “packages” depending on the products installed. In our case, we thus find a part “Mystic Light” and another “Gaming Gear”.

    Control  with application

    From “Mystic Light”, we will be able to manage the single RGB lighting of the mouse, with the brand’s logo positioned at the palm rest. We find classic effects with classic, breathable or rainbow lighting.

    If you have other MSI products, we imagine that it is also from this “Mystic Light” tab that we can synchronize the different lights.

    By going to the “Gaming Gear” tab, you can select the MSI Clutch GM41 and access its options. The tool allows you to create up to 3 configuration profiles but it does not seem possible to load them automatically depending on its games or applications.

    Performance

    The MSI Clutch GM41 is equipped with a PixArt PMW3389 optical sensor. If this is not the latest generation of the manufacturer.

    The model is able to climb up to 16,000 DPI, withstand speeds of 400 IPS and accelerations of 50 G. In use, nothing to complain about in terms of tracking the mouse works perfectly and never picks up during the gaming .

    Conclusion

    If the MSI Clutch GM41 could have been interesting thanks to its light weight, its affordable price. Its responsive buttons or even its excellent sensor, it is difficult to really recommend it against the current competition.

    Between its too rigid cable, its ergonomics not necessarily the most comfortable or its software dating from another era.

    Design & Ergonomics

    In general terms, this new Rival 5 takes up what we had previously discovered on the Rival 600 and 650 models. We therefore remain on a rather imposing mouse, with relatively classic ergonomics and ultimately low risk. We are far from the compact and atypical format of an Xtrfy MZ1 or a Cooler Master MM720 .

    In terms of dimensions, the mouse has a total length of 128.80 mm, for a width of 63.35 mm on the front, 68.15 mm on the back and about 62 mm at the grip. The maximum height is measured at 42mm at the highest point of its chassis.

    On the scale, the Rival 5 follows the current trend and displays only 85g. This is still much more than the lightest mice in the sector, but we are clearly moving away from the 96 g of a Rival 600 to which it was possible to add weights to climb up to 128 g.

    Comparison Design with Logitech G502

    For comparison, the Logitech G502 weighs nearly 120 g without its additional weights while it takes around 107 g for a Razer Basilisk. A big difference compared to the SteelSeries model.

    In use, the safe lines of this Rival 5 allow it to enjoy excellent comfort and the vast majority of players should be able to navigate it. Naturally, we are moving towards a grip in Palm Grip , allowing to secure the mouse while keeping direct access to its many buttons.

    Grip On Hand

    The Claw Grip can also be considered, depending on your hand size and your own preferences. For Fingertips, on the other hand , it is a little more complicated and we recommend other more compact mice.

    As for the general finishes, the mouse is only offered in black tones. The different plastics used seem to be of good quality and the whole does not present any play or cracking under torture. Also note that unlike previous Rival models, the rubber grips areas disappear from the side facades.

    Make way for the different buttons of this Rival 5, which as a reminder has a total of 9. The two main clicks are equipped with Golden Micro IP54 switches, where many competitors are moving towards models from Omron.

    In use, they offer good reactivity, with a clear and well-marked activation. No pre or post-travel to emphasize and their durability is announced for 80 million activation.

    Between the two buttons there is a wheel with rather well marked notches. Unlike a Logitech G502 Lightspeed or a Roccat Kone AIMO. However , it does not offer vertical scrolling and that’s a bit of a shame. Behind, a button allows by default to navigate between the different levels of sensitivity of the sensor.

    Left Front of The Mouse

    The rest of the controls are concentrated on the left front of the mouse. Here, it is moreover rather loaded with first of all the two usual side buttons, quite thin and positioned above a recess facilitating the positioning of the thumb.

    Positioned

    Still on the front, there is then a “trigger” positioned at the front of the thumb, in the spirit of what Logitech and Razer respectively offer on their G502 and Basilisk models. Unless you have very large hands (or fingers), activating this “trigger” is unfortunately quite complicated and requires some gymnastics.

    To overcome this problem, it is still possible to slightly rotate its grip in order to access it more naturally.

    The back of the mouse is pretty basic. There are two PTFE pads giving the whole a correct glide. Small inserts make it easier to remove them if you want to replace them with more efficient models.

    Connection for Rival 5

    On the connection side, the Rival 5 opts for a fixed braided cable with a length of 2 meters. While this is still softer than the horrible cord of the MSI Clutch GM4 1, it is far from up to the best models in the industry.

    Still too rigid, we recommend accompanying it with a bungee to play in the best possible conditions.

    Finally, let’s finish with a small point concerning the RGB lighting of the mouse. We find them at the level of the wheel. The palm rest and the side panels and for the time being they are probably the brightest that we have had the opportunity to see on a gaming mouse.

    The more sensitive players will probably opt for a reduced intensity so as not to be embarrassed during the game.

    Design & Ergonomics

    Once the Seiren X is assembled, the first thing that jumps out at you is obviously its particularly compact size. Faced with a Blue Yeti, the latest from Razer is clearly more discreet, and players wishing to keep a minimalist setup should clearly appreciate.

    A good point, especially if you want to position it in front of your keyboard, or directly on an arm without hiding part of your monitor.

    With a diameter of 4.5cm and a height of 19cm, the Seiren X is also almost twice as compact as the first version of Razer’s microphone. An asset for players who are used to streaming on the go, from a gaming laptop for example.

    In terms of style, the manufacturer retains the lines of the first version, with a relatively sober and elegant look. All in black, the microphone combines perfectly with other peripherals of the brand and has excellent finishes despite a predominantly plastic construction.

    A little more in detail, the Razer Seiren X presents two buttons when positioned in front of you.     As explained above, the Seiren X incorporates a 25 mm capsule with supercardioid capture. Clearly, the microphone here favors sources only positioned in front of it. This is obviously what we are looking for when we want to chat with other players or comment on its broadcast on Twitch or YouTube .

    The idea is therefore to capture only your voice, bypassing the sounds coming from the back or sides of the microphone. This way, your audience doesn’t have to endure the noise of your PC fans, and the capture of keystrokes on your mechanical keyboard should be reduced.

    Before coming to the performance itself, we will understand that the position of the Razer Seiren X will play a crucial role in its quality of capture. If the microphone is not perfectly positioned in front of you, its very reduced directivity will inevitably limit the quality of capture.

    In use, the capture quality is clearly there. Positioned about thirty cm from the mouth, the Seiren X offers excellent recording quality, while limiting the capture of ambient noise

    Conclusion

    Overall, this little Razer Seiren X is a nice surprise. The microphone provides excellent capture and allows you to record clear, detailed voice for your videos or live broadcasts .

    Compact and easy to use, it is obviously intended for players who do not want to bother with XLR connectors which are often more expensive and complicated to set up. The question of price obviously remains, because with a price of around 110 € , the Seiren X is still expensive.

    This is particularly the case when we compare it to the Blue Yeti , regularly available at a similar price, and which in turn offers more complete features (gain management, capture mode, etc.).

    For my part, I was able to continue my backup of Grounded on my Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus during my break (when I could still work #NonEssential).

    Personally, I particularly like Razer. I already own two Kraken Pro V2 headsets, an anodized aluminum mouse pad and a few mice from my early days in gaming.

    However, I admit that once I got the controller in hand. I still found it odd that the Razer Kishi controller was made of lightweight plastic.

    After some research, I learned that the controller is manufactured by high-tech brand Gamevice and therefore does not come out of Razer’s factories.

    Build Quality

    The plastic seems less robust to me than what the brand had accustomed me to. I was even afraid of “weakening” the lever by opening and closing the attachment device, even if it is only a helping hand.

    Beware, that doesn’t mean the Razer Kishi is worthy of an entry level accessory, just that, in my opinion, it doesn’t live up to Razer’s craftsmanship either.

    How Much RAM Does Your Pc Need?

    From loading your computer’s operating system to opening an Internet browser or running an application. Your PC requires a minimal amount of RAM to run efficiently. However, throwing more RAM into your PC doesn’t necessarily mean better performance.

    What is RAM?

    Random access memory ( RAM ) is a very fast form of memory that stores data so that applications can be accessed quickly. This is different from storage memory like SSDs or HDDs .

    Programs and apps, from word processors to games, all require RAM to run; the amounts add up quickly, so if your PC doesn’t have enough RAM to run open apps, they will suffer from slow speeds and often cause crashes.

    If basic tasks are performing poorly, frequently stop responding, or multitasking is nearly impossible, that’s a good indicator that your PC needs more RAM. However, it is also possible to have too much RAM; it won’t affect your machine negatively, but it’s a waste of money if you don’t need it.

    How To Check The Amount Of RAM In Your Computer?

    Before you upgrade your RAM, it’s worth knowing how much you already have. If you are using a Windows 10 PC, click on the “Start menu”, then type “About your PC”. This will bring up the system information screen detailing the RAM installed in your PC.

    For Windows 11 users, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open “Task Manager”. Here you can click on the “Performance” tab which will show the RAM of your computer.

    If you’re using a Mac, click the “Apple icon” and select “About This Mac”. This will display your computer’s statistics, including memory.

    General RAM Guidelines

    Before we dive deeper into specific apps, here’s a quick rundown of how much RAM your PC needs.

    If you’re using a Chromebook or tablet, 4GB of RAM should be enough for basic tasks and apps. This is really the minimum amount of RAM you should consider if you are on a tight budget.

    8 GB of RAM is often found in entry-level laptops and basic Windows PCs. That’s enough for word processing, web browsing, and even running low-end games.

    Windows and macOS users should find 16GB of RAM sufficient for most tasks, letting you run multiple apps, web browser tabs, and mid-to-high-end games.

    32 GB of RAM is ideal for demanding games, applications and graphic designers. However, if you are a 3D modeler or a computer engineer, the expansion to 64 GB of RAM will meet your needs with a noticeable increase in performance.

    Apps That Use The Most RAM

    When deciding how much RAM your PC needs, consider your most used apps and how much RAM they consume.

    Operating systems tend to use the most RAM; Windows 10 and 11 require at least 4 GB of RAM and macOS Mojave requires at least 2 GB of RAM. Web browsers also use a lot of your computer’s RAM. Opening 20 tabs in Chrome uses about 3GB of RAM, but this can easily be reduced by removing unused extensions, closing tabs you aren’t using, or recently installing the browser.

    The most RAM-intensive applications are professional tools used by 3D modelers and graphic designers, such as Maya and Adobe Premiere. These apps recommend between 16GB and 32GB of RAM, depending on how you use the programs. Adobe Premiere, for example, requires 32GB of dual-channel memory for 4K or higher projects.

    Do Gamers Need More RAM?

    Gaming PCs often need an absolute minimum of 8GB of RAM, but ideally at least 16GB of RAM to run the latest AAA titles. Games like Elden Ring are memory intensive, so they need 12 GB of RAM. So if you want your PC to run smoothly when playing games and running other processes in the background, 16GB would be ideal.

    However, many PC gamers don’t just play games, they also stream. While games don’t get a performance boost from installing more RAM, it does give you more leeway to run apps like OBS Studio, without affecting your gameplay.

    Faster RAM vs More RAM

    If you are planning to upgrade your PC and install more RAM, you will probably come across names like DDR4-1600 and DDR-3200. However, you should not assume that a higher number provides more RAM or even better performing RAM.

    The numbers at the end indicate the memory speed, for example 3200MHz. That doesn’t mean your RAM will run at that speed though; it’s the manufacturer’s way of telling you that the modules can run at this speed.

    On-board memory profiles can be enabled through your PC’s motherboard BIOS. So if you buy a DDR-3200 RAM stick, it will run at 2133 MHz unless you specify otherwise. Before doing this, however, you’ll need to make sure your motherboard supports Intel’s Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) and the speed your RAM modules are rated for. Note that this is different from overclocking your PC’s RAM.

    Prepare Your PC for the Future

    If your PC has enough RAM to run the programs and applications you need, you probably don’t need to buy and install more RAM unless your computer feels sluggish and slow to respond .

    However, if you have the budget to do so, it’s worth installing a little more RAM than necessary. it gives you more room to breathe if you start using more RAM-intensive apps, and it reduces the likelihood that you’ll need to upgrade your PC’s RAM in the near future.

    The most decent RAM won’t cost you an arm and a leg, especially if you only add 4GB or 8GB of RAM. And if you’re not concerned about RGB lighting, it’s an inexpensive way to ensure your PC doesn’t freeze while running multiple programs.

    The story of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti should be familiar ground. Halfway through the normal product cycle, release a better performing the best grapich cards?, better performing variant of the existing x80 series part with a price that makes for a compelling upgrade.

    The GTX 1080 was a great card at the time, and the GTX 1080 Ti upped the ante and fundamentally redefined what we expected from a mid-cycle update.

    But anything even remotely competitive against our hierarchy of GPU benchmarks, plus all the best graphics cards , are currently misplaced with virtually no retail availability and sky-high prices on sites like eBay. As a result, the RTX 3080 Ti looks much more like the RTX 2080 Ti than the GTX 1080 Ti: fast but expensive.

    Whats Change Significant ?

    Basically, nothing has changed with the Nvidia Ampere architecture. More and more games support ray tracing and DLSS, and driver improvements over the past nine months have changed performance slightly since launch.

    Otherwise, the RTX 3080 Ti uses the same GA102 GPU found in the GeForce RTX 3090 and GeForce RTX 3080 , disables two more SMs compared to the 3090 and halves the VRAM capacity compared to the 3090. It’s not that big. process in most games, and performance should generally be fairly similar between the two.

    Price More Expensive?

    The real question will be the retail price and availability, which will no doubt be terrible. Officially, the RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition is priced at €1,199 – €300 less than the 3090, but €500 more than the 3080.     Performance RTX 3080 Ti

    In terms of theoretical performance, the RTX 3080 Ti is 3-4% behind the RTX 3090 and 14-20% ahead of the RTX 3080. Memory bandwidth shows the biggest gains, thanks to the addition of two memory channels , although the clocks are slightly lower on the GPU side of things.

    Power consumption is rated at 350W, the same as the 3090 and 30W more than the 3080, which could be an issue given that the 3080 Ti Founders Edition uses the same cooler design as the 3080 rather than the three-slot monstrosity that is the 3090 Founders Edition.

    Improvement RTX 3080 Ti

    When it comes to generational improvements, the RTX 3080 Ti is potentially more than double the compute performance of the 2080 Ti, with almost 50% more memory bandwidth.

    In practice, we’d expect performance to be around 40-50% faster than the 2080 Ti, but that’ll mostly be at 4K and 1440p. Buying a GPU like this for 1080p gaming (unless you play games with lots of ray-tracing effects) would be a waste of money.

    Conclusion

    One last thing to note before continuing is that the RTX 3080 Ti implements Nvidia’s Ethereum hash limiter. The limiter works as expected so far, and we’ve seen average hash rates of 55-65 MHps with the stock settings, depending on the software used.

    This is essentially half the performance we expected from the hardware and similar to what we saw with the launch of the GeForce RTX 3060 . Hopefully Nvidia doesn’t accidentally bypass its own lock this time, though we expect prices to stay above the official starting point, even with the limiter.

    The HyperX Alloy Elite 2 keyboard takes the design of its predecessor and is positioned as a very complete mechanical keyboard emphasizing its RGB lighting.

    For this, it takes advantage of the brand’s new two-tone keys which house high-performance HyperX Red mechanical switches already seen on the Alloy Origins .

    Two years after the release of the Alloy Elite RGB keyboard , HyperX is back in the spotlight with a new iteration stamped “2”. This new version brings with it some new features which appear very thin on reading the technical sheet.

    The HyperX Alloy Elite 2 gaming keyboard offers a design identical to that of its big brother with a strong emphasis on RGB lighting and performance since the novelties of this model revolve around its keys and switches.

    Offered at a fairly high price of around 170 euros, this new iteration will have a lot to do to convince us, as the market has evolved in recent years.

    Design & Ergonomics for HyperX Alloy Elite 2

    In terms of design, HyperX did not put much effort into this new keyboard since it has exactly the same design as the two previous models. We made the same observation during our test of the RGB version.

    The keyboard offers here a “frameless” hard plastic frame overhung by a metal plate which gives it significant rigidity and allows the keyboard and its kilo and a half to hold well in place on our mat.

    The keys and their RGB lighting thus sit directly on this aluminum plate in order to efficiently diffuse the light.

    Above the typing zone, we find this bar slightly detached from the body of the keyboard. On the right, you will find the various multimedia control buttons as well as a very practical although a little cheap volume adjustment wheel .

    On the left, three other buttons are positioned to allow you to customize certain functions of the Alloy Elite 2 on the fly.

    The first allows to manage the power of the lighting, the second to switch between the different profiles. And the last activates the game mode which deactivates for example the Windows key.

    Lighting RGB

    Due to their slightly translucent white rim, they therefore better diffuse the light coming from the RGB switches.

    Here, it is clearly a matter of taste. Some will love it, others will find it very ugly. For my part, I am quite convinced. Even if at full power the lighting is a bit too powerful on this model.

    Note also that this news touch almost overshadows the usual light bar on the top of the keyboard and which can display rather varied lighting effects.

    Mechanical Switches

    The other novelty of the Alloy Elite 2 is hidden under these new keys since the keyboard features the red mechanical switches signed HyperX.

    We had already been able to test these switches during our test of the Alloy Origins and personally I’m still a fan. We will come back to this a little later in the article.

    On the other hand, we find the usual very imposing braided USB cable. Which will need to be connected via two separate ports to be able to take advantage of the USB port on the back of the keyboard.

    Profile Setting

    As far as the functionalities are concerned, nothing very exciting since. As usual, it will be necessary to turn to the HyperX NGenuity driver to manage the entire keyboard configuration. The driver has not changed at all since our last test of a HyperX product and we still find this interface not necessarily very clear or easy to use.

    Note that, as before, the driver must remain open and cannot be minimized in the Windows notification bar.

    First, there is an interface dedicated to configuring the lighting effects of the Alloy Elite 2. The operation here is quite clear and offers an interface similar to the layers found in Photoshop.

    Configuration

    The second tab is dedicated to the allocation of keys and has a fairly wide range of possible configurations. You can thus choose to remap the keys with any other on the keyboard. Certain system functions or even recordable macros directly from the driver.

    All these settings can obviously be saved in profiles that we will associate with our games or applications. The keyboard also has an internal memory capable of storing 3 different profiles.

    Be careful though: these profiles will only be accessible when the pilot is not running. If this is the case, the profiles present in Genuity will take precedence over those saved on the Alloy.

    Performances

    We are now tackling the performance of the Alloy Elite 2 which. Like the Alloy Origins range, benefits from the new HyperX Red switches.

    The difference is in the stroke which is shorter on HyperX switches with “only” 3.8mm.  And an activation point located at 1.8mm. The gain in responsiveness is quickly noticeable and will also require a little adaptation time to master the keyboard perfectly.

    On our side, we are really fans of these switches which perfectly meet our needs whether in game or in writing. They turn out to be a little louder than the Cherry MX Reds and are in a way similar to the SteelSeries QX2 Red switches found on the Apex 7 .

    In the same way, he was put to contribution for the writing of this article and answers there too present. HyperX seems to have found the right recipe for their homemade switches, which are simply excellent.

    Conclusion

    In the end, HyperX gives us here a fairly mixed evolution of its Alloy Elite RGB model. If we always take advantage of an efficient design, we regret the lack of real novelty. The new two-tone keys may nevertheless appeal to some even if the absence of the wrist rest seems frankly disappointing.

    It is in terms of performance that the evolution is most felt with the arrival of HyperX Red switches which are very efficient. They are among our favorite linear switches on the market.

    We recommend that you turn to this model instead if you are ready to skip the multimedia controls. And very “bright” RGB lighting of the Alloy Elite 2.

    Discovering Microsoft Windows 11 and its first beta

    Microsoft allows its Insiders to test the initial beta version of Windows 11 and discover its new features. The developer hopes to obtain initial feedback from users and finalize certain choices. Here are our findings.

    Installation Windows 11

    The Windows installation process is for the moment strictly identical to that of Windows 10. We proceeded from a USB key with the same steps. The configuration has changed slightly and the settings for Cortana, Microsoft’s intelligent personal assistant, are still not included in the program.

    This step had already been removed on Windows 10 21H1. New, Windows 11 will ask you to name your PC to avoid the Laptop-12ABCDE3 type names when you look for your PC on the network. This more is appreciable.

    The Professional version does not require a Microsoft account unlike the Home version. The rest of the configuration procedure does not change since it is necessary to accept or refuse the various requests to send data to Microsoft or targeted ads.

    The PC finally restarts on a waiting screen with blue halos. After a few seconds, here we are on the Windows 11 Desktop.

    Brand new interface

    We discovered it when getting started with the leaked preview before Microsoft announced: the Start menu is now centered on the bar by default and the window corners have been rounded. Who says new visual identity, also says new sound identity.

    All the sounds (start-up, notifications, etc.) have been reviewed and are very discreet, if not too much. Clicking on the Windows button brings up the new Start menu. Exit the tiles, place two sections: the applications pinned to the upper part, then the recommendations.

    In Pinned, we find our applications. Formerly tiles, they are now icons that can be selected for direct access. An All applications menu lists all installed programs, while the Our recommendations section displays recently installed applications or the most recently opened documents.

    Right-clicking the Start button always brings up the same system settings and tools, such as task manager and shutdown options.

    It is obviously possible to install the Start button on the left of the taskbar, but the latter is no longer movable and will remain in any case at the bottom of the screen.

    Using the Start button centered on the taskbar, we noticed that it shifts slightly to the left each time we open a new app. So that after opening a dozen programs, it is no longer in its original place and can generate click errors.

    Explorer Made Simple

    Windows 11 File Explorer has also been simplified. The headband present in its predecessor has indeed been completely revised. It must be said that on Windows 10. This banner had inherited various changes from previous versions and was starting to become a real little readable tote.

    Microsoft has therefore removed the entire banner to leave only the essential in the form of icons and without labels. We note the appearance of a button with three points Learn more which allows access to the options removed from the banner. When you are at the root of the storage unit, it even brings up the Clean, Optimize or Format options.

    Context Menu

    The context menu, which appears via a right-click, has undergone the same slimming treatment. Thus, all the options that the software could install are relegated to a Show more options submenu containing the right-click context menu of Windows 10.

    Finally, a nice little detail, an active application displays a small dot under its icon in the taskbar. And if this application performs a task in progress, for example a photo processing or a file transfer, said pad then turns into a miniature progress bar. This is reminiscent of a certain Apple macOS.

    Improved Multitasking

    To improve multitasking, Microsoft has implemented Snap Layouts, or anchors in the language of Molière. These are preconfigured window layouts that allow you to neatly place your windows and applications on the desktop so that they are all visible.

    To access this function, hover over the Maximize button in a window to take advantage of the different possible layouts. Their number varies depending on the definition of the screen. Once the layout is selected, the tool guides the user to place the windows one by one. You can also call this function with the Win-Z keyboard shortcut.

    Another novelty is “docking”. This very practical option allows Windows 11 to manage the connection and disconnection of a second screen while keeping the layout of the windows from one configuration to another.

    So if you’ve placed four apps in each corner of your second monitor’s desktop and unplugged it, windows will automatically minimize to the taskbar and return to their original place when you connect the monitor again. You can also define if the applications are reduced or migrated on the main screen.

    A Desktop button appears in the taskbar between those of search and widgets. This allows you to create and access Virtual Offices more easily. It is now also possible to apply a theme for each of these in order to better identify them.

    The return of widgets

    Oh joy, widgets are back! Please note, these are not Windows Vista floating widgets. In Windows 11, they are confined to the left of the screen within a banner. You can call them up by clicking on the dedicated button in the taskbar or by using the Win-W keyboard shortcut.

    At the moment, the list of widgets is relatively limited with a calendar, a todo list , tips, traffic, weather or sports scores. The customization is more or less advanced depending on the widget. Thus, all these widgets appear on the upper part of the window, while below a customizable news feed runs almost endlessly.

    Hopefully the developers will come up with more interesting widgets, because at the moment this window doesn’t differ much from an information portal like Bing’s.

    More intuitive settings

    Microsoft has finally reworked its settings panel. The previous menu introduced with Windows 8 did indeed have a taste of unfinished business and existed in the shadow of the Control Panel.

    This redesign makes it easier to find the parameter you want to change and, above all, the user no longer gets lost in the different menus. The route taken is displayed at the top, the settings categories on the left and the home page offers a summary of the PC with the most common settings.

    New tools are welcome, like a new battery manager for laptops. Finished, the modes of feeding which one did not really know what they were doing! There is only one power saving mode left, which activates at 20% battery capacity.

    Quick Settings

    Quick settings are also appearing in the taskbar. Clicking on the wifi, sound or battery icon pulls down the menu. Microsoft is also largely inspired here by what is done in the competition. It is thus possible to adjust the volume and the brightness. And now up to 12 buttons allow you to swap features like wifi.

    Bluetooth – finally! -, airplane mode, etc. The Win-A keyboard shortcut will bring up these quick settings, and those who used it to bring up notifications will now have to crack a Win-N.

    Welcome improvements in typing

    In Windows 11, new three and four finger gestures are emerging. By sliding three fingers on the touchpad from top to bottom, all windows are reduced / enlarged.

    A three-finger swipe left or right allows you to switch from one application to another.

    With four fingers, it is in the virtual offices that we will be able to navigate. A down gesture also minimizes windows, while a four finger up gesture displays the task view (Win-Tab), a horizontal gesture for navigating between Virtual Desktops.

    Voice Input Improved

    Voice input has also been improved; the easiest way to activate it is to use the Win-H keyboard shortcut. Once on the way, you will have to enter this shortcut each time you want to use it. In the settings, it is possible to activate it permanently and to add the consideration of punctuation.

    For use in tablet mode, virtual keyboards are also revised with new themes and more customization at the display level to avoid hiding interesting content.

    Identical performance

    We evaluated the performance of our Asus Zenbook 13 Oled Laptop PC (UM325UA) after its upgrade to Windows 11. To do this, we subjected it to the same tests that allow us to calculate the performance index of the processor.

    And, for now, Windows 11 doesn’t make any changes. On all the benchmarks and application tests that we apply, the results are almost identical and neither of the two operating systems takes precedence over the other.

    Aesthetic and Handling tweaks

    At the time of judgment, this first beta of Windows 11 offers only aesthetic and handling tweaks. As well as a few new features, such as widgets that were not necessarily clamored for by users.

    We note the absence of some features yet announced such as the compatibility of Android applications. The dynamic refresh rate or the integration of DirectStorage for players.

    It will also be necessary to wait for the various manufacturers to offer drivers dedicated to Windows 11. In order to benefit from its latest improvements, which should not be long after the release of this beta version.

    Microsoft therefore still has a few months ahead of it to refine Windows 11 before the release slated for fall 2021. It is very likely that we will be entitled to improved versions by then.
